COMMENTARY

An issue which sparks immediate comment both for and against is the ability to defend oneself with a firearm. It seems that there is generally no middle of the road attitude when this issue is discussed-either a person is adamantly in favor or adamantly against. The social experiment conducted in England, Australia and now beginning in Canada in which firearms have been band in favor of allowing the government to provide protection has proven to be a dismal failure. In both England and Australia, the crime rate has increased at an exponential rate and we are beginning to see this trend in Canada.

The liberals in our country feel that this approach (let the government protect you) is the way to peace and tranquility--at least that is what they wish you to believe. If the truth be known, they might admit that this is a way for them to gain control of our lives.

A truism is that once you cease the ability to defend your freedom, you cease to be a citizen and become a subject.

How do we lawfully defend our freedom? Certainly, each of us by ourselves do not have such an ability. We must be part of a greater movement to effect change and continue to be permitted the freedom to own firearms. This is where several organizations come into play.

NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION

This organization has done more to preserve our liberties than any other organization currently operating and all gun owners should be a member of this organization. Due to its single minded purpose of defending gun rights, it has caused many to decline to join the movement because it is not tolerant when it comes to giving away any of our gun freedoms. Their answer is NO-PERIOD. The problem with our society today is that we are afraid to take a firm stand against certain issues for fear of being branded a radical. TEXAS STATE RIFLE ASSOCIATION

On a state level, membership in this organization will help guard against state officials passing laws which will restrict our ability to use firearms. They have a great legislative staff which follows every gun bill brought up in the state legislature and lobbies for passage of those which broaden our gun rights and against those which restricts them. Remember-the freedom which we have today was bought at a great price. Let's honor the sacrifices of the brave men and women who came before us, many of whom paid the ultimate price for this freedom, by not allowing this freedom to be taken away from us.
